A garden is like a baby... so much potential for growth, but a bit temperamental and VERY dependent on schedules and nourishment. But unlike a baby, it doesn't cry when it's hungry, and if I'm honest, it's easy to forget.
So, if you're planning a garden--especially more of a "hobby garden" like me, the easier the better. Seriously. If the garden isn't easy to water, I'm not realistically doing it. If it's complicated to tend, I'm out. And if you're creating a full-on homestead situation, you're probably managing a dozen balls in the air. So, let's make this one a tad easier.
Disclaimer: I'm not a gardening expert as you might've guessed already 🤭, but I've done a ton of googling and tried a lot of products, so hopefully our trial and errors sets you up for more winning. Here are some products that have gone a long way.
THE PLANTING SITUATION
Our soil isn't great, so for a while, we focused on simple potted plants, which are perfect for brand-new gardeners! We've relied on sturdy plant stands (to keep the wind from tossing them around) and Terracotta pots from our local hardware store. (We tried plastic but they only last a season before the damage begins.) Here are some Amazon links...

Medium Terracotta Pots (I recommend getting these in person for sizing - ours are mostly these two sizes) & Large Terracotta Pots
This year, my husband built us a simple raised bed, similar to this one, but if you're looking for something a little more "already finished," here are similar Amazon garden beds:
Raised Garden Bed (ours is 18" to suit most plants in our garden, but this 15" one is pretty close)
WATER IS LIFE
Y'all, I had no idea how important a water hose can be! My hubby, Duke, was the brains behind our water hose situation, and I'm not going to lie. I was really judgy about it. He kept saying we needed these fancy hoses and holders, and I thought, why not just save money and buy the cheapest hose?
Well, after he let me struggle with my own choices for a couple years, he finally showed me the light. The hose setup really does matter because, remember, if it's too hard, I'm just not going to do it because we have so much life to manage. And the plants are going to die.

Ever since he took the reins, our garden has been going strong. And a one-time investment has lasted YEARS. Here's some links to our various setups:
A Flat Hose (It never gets tangled up or kinked! SO MUCH LESS frustration.)
The Pocket Hose (This one is mostly fun, but it does take up less space because it grows when in use)
The Hose Hideaway in grey (This rolls up the hose so easily, and withstood our dog's destruction!)
The Hose Hideaway in brown wicker

The Hose Hangout - simple (We use this one with the pocket hose)
Hose Keeper decorative wall mount (We use this on the front porch where it's visible)
And because I was tired of water spraying everywhere, this little adapted was a worthwhile addition.
Last but definitely not least, this year, we upgraded our hoses to be even more practical for our new raised garden bed. It like magic. One quick turn of the faucet and everything gets water at once! AND it wasn't even expensive!
Adjustable Drip Irrigation System
PLUS, this adapter that lets us use the faucet for two purposes at once:
Now that you've got your gear, don't forget to checkout our GROW GUIDE, which compiles watering, sun, and planting information for 64 different plants! The digital copy is only a few dollars and can be used over and over again.
Happy Planting!! 🪴💚
